The Book of Jook: Chinese Medicinal Porridges
![]() | This is a great little book about congee (or "jook" in Cantonese). It's starts with an overview about congee and the benefits of a "clear and bland" diet, then it has a large list a recipes from traditional sources. The recipes are listed according to ailment. So if you want to treat the common cold, high cholesterol, diarrhea, or impotence, this book has recipes. |
Slow Cooker/Crockpot

You can cook congee in a pot on the stove, but I found it easier to just use a small crock pot (or slow cooker).
This is a cheap one that holds 1.5 quarts. It was originally made for sauces and dips, but it's a great size for a single serving of congee. Plug it in the night before and wake up to warm congee. |
